Doddinghurst Fishery

This is a mature and well established lake just under an acre in size with 20 pegs. Stream fed, it has a constant flow of fresh water. Originally dug as a water supply for a nearby farm and varies in depth from around 3 feet at the top end of the lake to over 10 feet at the bottom end. Most of the pegs drop off quickly in the margins and have a good depth close in. There are plenty of overhanging trees and brambles providing close in cover for the fish.

The main species are Roach, Rudd, Skimmer Bream, Carp and Perch (some of which go over 2 lbs), with the odd tench making a rare appearance.

Carp are plentiful and growing well, mainly ranging from 2-8lbs Because the lake is deep these carp are often seen basking and can be caught on surface baits. Beware though, the carp in this lake fight very hard and are very good at heading for cover!

Skimmers and bream are caught up to 2lb and the lake benefitted from a stocking of 3,500 small skimmers in 2013, which will ensure quality fishing in the future years.

Maggots over pellets works well and in the warmer months good weights of these new fish and the bigger residents can be caught shallow on pellets; pole or waggler work well.Roach, Rudd and Perch are plentiful and winter catches of silver fish into double figures can be caught both pleasure fishing and in matches. There are some good quality roach that will often respond to hemp and caster tactics.

Lots of different methods can be used on the lake, the carp will respond to a variety of tactics from conventional specimen tactics to float fishing or feeder fishing. Pellets or fishmeal ground baits are reliable baits in the warmer weather and the margins will usually produce throughout the day as small groups of fish move in and out. Evening fishing  in the margins can be very productive in the summer. Lots of other baits such as meat, corn and bread will also work as well as maggots in the colder months.

The silver fish will respond to float fishing, on the pole or rod and plenty of fish can be caught close in, from 3 to 6m from the bank. Regular loose feeding maggots will get plenty of bites from small fish with some impressive hybrids and skimmers making an appearance. The carp respond positively to loose feed and will bully other fish away throughout the session.

The lake is ideal for youngsters learning to fish as plenty of silvers can be caught very close in due to the depth and the carp are no so big that they are impossible to handle.

The lake benefited from an Angling Trust Grant a few years ago to create accessible swims for disabled anglers. These are in or near the car park and also suitable for youngsters and families.

The perch in this lake are a real feature with numerous fish in excess of 2lbs being caught evry year during the winter matches.

Mores Lane Fishery

Mores Lane Fishery Coxtie Green

This club fishery consists of two lakes, the smaller one has around 10 fishable swims while the larger lake has around 40 pegs. Both are mature lakes surrounded by trees with lily pads and weed beds.

Small Lake

This is deeper than the large lake and contains a large head of carp ,particularly for it's size, roach, some big perch and bream, which have been caught to 6lb, Tench to 4lb have also been caught. The carp in this lake are generally larger than those in the main lake and run into double figures.

Floating bread can be devastating for the carp in still weather as can feeder and pellet waggler tactics. The fish will come close to the bank to feed and there i splenty of bankside cover to target in the margins.

Large Lake

This lake is stocked with a carp and silver fish and the carp are growing very well and can be caught on a variety of methods including method feeders, pole, float fishing and ledgered baits.

Pleasure catches on this lake can easily exceed 50 pounds if the carp move in and they fight very hard.

All methods will work with short range float fishing being a favourite. Pellets, corn, maggots etc. all have their day but you will always catch a wide variety and plenty of fish with a loose feeding approach using maggots or casters.

This is a great fishery offering plenty of bites and plenty of good quality fish for everyone. A large car park via a secluded access road, Nice and quiet and private.

Description

Approximately a third of a mile of river ranging in depths and flow. The section upstream of the footbridge is deeper and tends to flow well in the winter.

Species & Tactics

The river, especially up to the footbridge can provide excellent winter fishing for roach and there are also chub and bream in the wider, deeper section from the fallen tree on the far side bank and the footbridge. A float fishing approach works well just above the bridge and in the area immediately downstream of the cottages. Pole fishing is very effective with hemp and tares/sweetcorn useful for getting past the bleak. If it's flowing, use firm balls of ground bait for the roach. A stick float approach will also work.

The bend by the fallen tree will produce bream when there is colour in the water; a swim feeder with ground bait will work here with fish being caught in and on the edge of the main flow.

Pike fishing in the winter is very good, with numbers of low double figure fish responding to dead baits; legered or float fished. The fish tend to live in slacks near weeds and overhanging bank side vegetation. A roving approach works well as the pike will generally take within 30 minutes of casting if they're there. Dead sea baits such as sprats and sardines work effectively.

Large perch up to 3 lbs are present, with lobworms fished into holes and slacks the best method.

This VIDEO gives some top tips for small river float fishing

River Stour-Henny, Essex

Description

This small river lies on the Essex/Suffolk border near to Sudbury. It consists of two main sections: above and below a small weir.

The section above the weir, also known as the meadows, contains some big bream along with the other main river species of roach, chub, perch and pike. It is wide and slow flowing and deeper than the downstream section.

Species & Tactics

The river below the weir is narrower and faster flowing. Roach dace and chub can be caught on the stick float a short distance below the weir and further down the stretch. The river suits a roving style of fishing, and has plenty of features with overhanging willows, streamer weed etc. In the winter, pre-baiting several swims with mashed bread can produce chub.

The overhanging willow near the footbridge can produce nets of chub to float tactics on the right day.

Good numbers of pike can be caught during the winter with fish into low double figures. Dead baits on the bottom work well with a roving approach. There are obvious areas to try for the pike however, the long, wide upper stretches do suit dead-baits trotted or float fished close in against the marginal reeds.

This section of river will suit flowing water traditionalists who like to explore a lovely stretch of river in peaceful and attractive surroundings.
